Winter wiper blades

Concern
The wipers streak, chatter or skip across the glass once it gets cold, and leave a smeared band right where you need to see.
Cause
Wiper rubber stiffens in the cold, so it no longer follows the curve of the windshield closely. Snow and ice also pack into the open joints of a frame-style blade, which lifts parts of the rubber off the glass. TRICO also notes that cold makes rubber more brittle and likely to crack.
Correction
Fit blades built to keep ice out of the frame: a one-piece beam blade, or a frame blade sealed inside a rubber boot. TRICO suggests replacing blades about every six months where winters bring ice, snow and road salt, so fall is a good time to change them.

Pick it if

You get regular snow, sleet or freezing rain, and you're willing to put winter blades on in the fall and take them off in spring.

Skip it if

You'd rather not swap blades twice a year, or your winters are mostly cold rain. An all-season beam blade is less hassle.

Before you buy

Prices are per blade and change with length, so a 26-inch blade can cost more or less than the 22-inch prices here. Most cars need two different lengths up front. Look up both sizes before you shop.

Claims like "lasts 40% longer" come from each maker's own testing and aren't measured the same way from brand to brand. We don't compare them directly.

From the service counter

  • Don't use the wipers to break ice off the windshield. Clear the glass with a scraper and the defroster first. Frozen blades can tear, and the wiper motor can be strained.
  • Before you turn the car off on a freezing night, switch the wipers off so they don't try to sweep frozen glass at the next start.
  • Fill up with winter washer fluid rated for your coldest temperatures. Summer fluid can freeze in the lines and on the glass.
  • Never pour hot water on a cold windshield. The sudden temperature change can crack the glass.
  • Wipe the rubber edge with a damp cloth now and then. Road salt and grime cause a lot of streaking that looks like a worn blade.
